Best book out there for the most fundamental training. Even if you've studied music for some years you'll find that after the first 10ish pages of exercises you'll be struggling with what you can see are still basic skills.As long as you have elementary musical notation knowledge you can start on this book. The lack of context may throw you off, but be persistent! Be pragmatic and keep training.This book is a result of the recognition that even some big musicians lack basic skils, due to poor teaching of basics, as said by Hindemith in the preface.

A great book on practicing and understanding the basics of music theory. This goes without saying that it's content includes a very wide range of musicians. So if anyone has not been introduced properly in Western Music is going to have a tough time understanding the concepts. The ideal would be to get a good teacher. Though I have worked through the first lesson and its quite intelligible. Needs hard work and intelligent effort.

I had this book in the early 80s and I used then as a music professor. I am using it again because I consider its importance and value on the music field. Great for any musician, full in exercises that is progressive in difficulty. It is useful for singers, and for any kind of instrument. It brings solid knowledge in rhythm, intonation, and many more.Whatever you are the teacher or the student, it is a book to have and to enjoy.

Hindemith is the man when it comes to music. I love the first chapter where he does that simple rhythmic explanation. This will help develop good musicianship skills, and is a good book for practice. Get this and the Melodia book to practice sight singing, and that intro level college sight singing course will be a joke! Of course, books don't make you better, practice does. Remember that always.

This text was recommended by my musicianship professor. It's a classic.
