This works properly. The original design had a long locking screw and knob that made it impossible to set the camera down on its bottom. This newer design eliminates this problem. I had previously bought a copy plate made to the old design but it was defective (bent screw and lock knob machined badly) so I machined a countersink seat and replaced it with a 3/8-16 flat head screw (it was installed on a view camera mount block which had the larger screw size). This Manfrotto plate has a captive 1/4-20 screw that is flush with the bottom of the plate when mounted on a camera. I installed it on a Super Speed Graphic and found that it does not interfere with the camera's drop bed even with its relatively large size.

This quick release plate really was an upgrade to the original. The biggest plus is the flush mount, now I am able to put my camera down and not be unstable on the nut and storage in my camera bag is vastly reduced. Well priced and good quality.
