My 11 years old daughter recently took up saxophone as her second instrument, with no previous woodwind experience at all.I did not know which reed to get, reading all the Amazon reviews did not help, you hear stories of only 1 out of 3 new reeds works... etc. So I ended up getting the cheapest branded reeds, the Vandoren Alto Sax Traditional and Juno by Vandoren Alto Sax, both @ 1.5 as recommended by her tutor. My daughter only practices the alto sax about 10-15 mins every other day and we went through 2 reeds already in 3 months.I came across synthetic reeds during online research, and narrowed the choices down to Fiberreed Blatt Carbon Onyx "S" and Legere (1.5 only available in Studio and American Cut).Concerned about the strength differences between the traditional and synthetic reeds, I got the Legere American Cut (1.50) as Legere offers strength exchange programme within 30 days. The reed came in a plastic protective case that securely clips the reed in place and suspend the tip of the reed so it is not touching the case, very solid feel when in the case. (Although do take care not to damage the tip of the reed when removing the reed from the case. There is a video on Legere website under FAQs about the protective Reed Case)There is no wetting needed and the Legere reed warms up very quickly. Sounds same as the traditional reed to me.My daughter said it is "easier" to play the alto sax with the Legere reed, I do notice the improvement, too.Her tutor has never used synthetic reeds and is somewhat sceptical of synthetic reed (for a beginner). He said he will do some research and let us know if a beginner should even use these synthetic reeds. For now, we rotate between the Legere and Vandoren traditional reeds. There appears to be no issues or difficulties for my daughter rotating and switching between the traditional bamboo and synthetic reeds, and the strength is similar, at least for 1.5.Can't comment on built quality / longevity yet, but impression so far is good.Only 4 stars as the Legere is 9x more expensive than the Vandoren Traditional reed, so it needs to last at least 9-12 months to justify the extra cost!
